Hoinville, Jowell et al (1977)
Hoinville G and Jowell R and associates
Survey Research Practice
(Heinemann 1977) see also my review in Quality and Quantity, 13, 1979, pp 183-184
Memorable for the chapter on sampling by Barry Hedges: only one equation!
There's a new edition due out, but not clear when.

Survey Research in Practice
(Sage, 2011)
I asked for a review copy, but apparently this book is not due to be published until 2020! I’m sure it will be a good book as I had dealings over many years with Roger Jowell, Roger Thomas and others from SCPR/Natcen (Martin Collins, Barry Hedges, Sharon Witherspoon, Jane Ritchie, Jean Morton-Williams, Bridget Taylor, Patten Smith) who used to teach their appropriate sections on Survey Research Practice (sister course to Survey Analysis Workshop) at PNL.
[Publisher's blurb]
"This is a new edition of Hoinville and Jowell (1977, above). Providing a thorough introduction to all the steps involved in designing and carrying out a survey, this text incorporates coverage of surveys that involve interviewing and those that use self-completion methods.
The book covers each aspect of the survey process from conceptualisation and design, through to data processing and management, including a discussion of issues such as survey quality and errors, dealing with non-response and the role of the field interviewer. Separate chapters discuss ethical and legal considerations and survey project management and the text is interspersed with concrete practical examples and advice.
Survey Research Practice will be invaluable to students who need to know how surveys are carried out and will be a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners who may be carrying out a survey for the first time."
