[New page 2 May 2015]
Book: W G Runciman Relative Deprivation and Social Justice (RKP 1966)
Data set: Relative Deprivation and Social Justice 1966 (UKDS SN 28)
Fieldwork: 1962-63, Research Services Ltd
(created for teaching, 1975 by Dr Annette Scambler, Sociology, Surrey: fully restored 2014 by John Hall)
SN28 Commentary on Relative Deprivation and Social Justice (pdf, 42 pp) This is a bit too long and I am going to break it up into smaller sections. Following intensive exploration work this document was originally written in four sections April-May 2014 with major additions in August. It may it seem repetitive and over-detailed, but it illustrates the way an experienced survey researcher and SPSS user approaches SPSS *.sav and *.sps files, particularly when dealing with SPSS syntax and raw data from 80-column Hollerith cards (including multi-punches) dating from half a century ago, and from a social research perspective.
SN28 Appendix 1 - Download of original data from UKDS (pdf, 6 pp)
SN28 Appendix 4 - Annette Scambler's 1975 version (pdf, 6 pp)
Further appendices for SN 28 will cover:
Data errors and recodes
Recovery of data from a binary file.
Restoration of, and modifications to, the distributed SPSS *.sav file (including *.sps files used.)
Recreation of Annette Scambler's exercises
Development of new examples, homework exercises and provision of specimen answers.
